The Events module

Running an event on Discord always hits the same three obstacles: knowing who is taking part, counting points, and announcing a result nobody disputes. The module handles all three.

Sign-ups

An event announced with a message and reactions invariably produces the same situation: half the sign-ups do not show, and two people insist they signed up with nothing to prove it.

The module keeps an explicit list: who signed up, when, and — for a team event — in which team. The list is visible before the start, so groups can be formed calmly rather than in a rush.

  • An event banner, so the announcement does not look like an ordinary message.
  • Teams: composed manually or automatically.
  • Recurrence: a weekly event is scheduled once instead of recreated every week.

Points and the live leaderboard

During the event, staff award points. The leaderboard updates live in the channel, which changes the atmosphere completely: participants watch their position move instead of waiting for a result at the end.

It also prevents disputes. A leaderboard visible throughout has been seen by everyone; one announced at the end has to be taken on trust.

Rewards

On closing, the module can distribute rewards automatically: a role, server currency if the Economy module is active, or an inventory item.

Automatic distribution is not just convenience. A reward promised and handed out three days later, by hand, is nearly always handed out wrong — someone is forgotten, and that is what people remember about the event.

If the reward is a role, check before the event that the Kuratos role sits above it in the role list. Otherwise distribution fails at the worst possible moment.

Preparing an event that goes well

  1. Announce several days ahead, and remind the day before. A dedicated notification role beats an @everyone.
  2. Set up reminders: the module sends them automatically X minutes before the start or before sign-ups close, with the mention of your choice.
  3. Rehearse the run of play with staff before sign-ups open. Ambiguous rules always surface live, in front of everyone.
  4. Announce the rewards at sign-up, not at the end. That is what decides participation.

Key points

  • An explicit sign-up list removes pre-event disputes.
  • A live leaderboard changes the atmosphere and removes post-event disputes.
  • Automatic reward distribution avoids the omission everyone remembers.
  • If the reward is a role, check hierarchy BEFORE the event.
  • Rewards are announced at sign-up: that is what decides participation.

Frequently asked questions

Can you run a team event?

Yes, with manual or automatic team composition, and a leaderboard by team rather than by person.

Can an event repeat weekly?

Yes, recurrence is part of the module: the event is scheduled once and recreates itself, sign-ups included.

Why was the reward not distributed?

If it is a role, it is probably placed above the Kuratos role in the server role list: Discord then refuses the grant.

Put this guide into practice

Kuratos sets up in minutes what this guide describes, and is configured from a web interface rather than through commands.
