Enabling Community mode on Discord

Community mode is a free setting most servers never enable, often because they believe it is for large servers only. It unlocks a set of useful features from a few dozen members onwards.

What Community mode unlocks

  • Rules screening: a newcomer must tick a box before they can post. It puts an end to “I didn’t know”, and it is free.
  • Announcement channels: other servers can follow them and receive your announcements on their own server.
  • Onboarding: a guided flow where the arrival picks their interests and receives the matching roles before they even enter.
  • Server insights: retention, activity, where arrivals come from. The only place Discord tells you how many of last month’s arrivals are still around.
  • Access to Discovery, if Discord’s criteria are met — see below.

Server insights alone are reason enough to enable the mode. Without them you are steering your server’s growth blind.

The requirements

Discord asks for a few settings before enabling the mode. They are not arbitrary: they ensure a public server has a minimum of safeguards.

  1. Verification level at least “Medium” — the account must be five minutes old.
  2. Explicit media filter on for all members.
  3. A rules channel and a community updates channel, both public. The second receives the messages Discord sends to administrators.
  4. Default notifications set to “mentions only”. Otherwise every message notifies everyone, which drives newcomers away faster than anything.

None of these is a trap: they are settings you should have anyway. The setup wizard proposes and applies them for you.

How to enable it

  1. Server Settings → Enable Community.
  2. Follow the wizard: it checks the requirements and applies the missing ones.
  3. Designate the rules channel and the community updates channel.
  4. Confirm. The mode is reversible at any time, with no loss.

Onboarding: the most under-used feature

Onboarding lets you ask the arrival questions — “what interests you?”, “how did you find us?” — and grant roles based on their answers, before they enter the server.

The gain is double. They only see channels that concern them, so they do not get lost in a list of forty. And you learn where your members come from, which no other Discord feature tells you.

It is probably the most profitable feature of Community mode, and the one fewest servers configure.

Discovery: what to expect

Discovery is Discord’s internal directory: your server becomes findable by search, inside the app. It is a real, free source of traffic.

Discord sets eligibility criteria — a minimum member count, plus age and retention requirements — and it changes them. Read them in your server settings rather than trusting a figure quoted elsewhere: that figure has changed several times.

What to expect is more stable: Discovery traffic is plentiful and poorly qualified. Many accounts visit, few stay. One more reason to fix the first minute before appearing there — otherwise you are adding arrivals to a server that keeps none.

How Kuratos helps

Community mode prepares the arrival; what follows is on you. The Welcome module takes over the moment they enter — welcome message, image, first action — and Automatic roles complements onboarding for roles people pick later.

The Community module adds what Discord does not: voice channels created on demand rather than ten empty ones, statistics channels visible in the list, and a memory wall that keeps what marked the server.

Key points

  • Community mode is free and useful from a few dozen members.
  • Server insights alone justify enabling it.
  • Onboarding is the most profitable feature, and the least configured.
  • Discovery criteria change: read them in your settings, not elsewhere.
  • Discovery traffic is plentiful and poorly qualified: fix the first minute first.

Frequently asked questions

Does Community mode cost anything?

No, it is entirely free. It only asks for a few security settings you should have anyway.

How many members do you need for Discovery?

Discord sets a minimum member count plus age and retention criteria, and it has changed them several times. The only reliable place to check is the Discovery section of your own server settings.

Can Community mode be turned off?

Yes, at any time. You lose the features it unlocks, but nothing is deleted: the rules and updates channels become ordinary channels again.

What is Discord onboarding?

A guided flow shown to arrivals before they enter: they answer a few questions and receive the matching roles, sparing them a list of forty channels where three concern them.
