The Levels / XP module
A levelling system does not create activity — it reveals it. Set well, it gives regulars a visible reason to stay; set badly, it produces empty chatter and a leaderboard nobody looks at.

What a levelling system is actually for
The point is not to reward message volume, but to make seniority visible. On a server, the most useful thing a newcomer can know is who they are dealing with: who has been around, who knows the subject, who answers often.
It is also an indirect moderation tool. Restricting a channel to a minimum level filters better than any rule: a disposable account will never reach level 10.
Setting the curve and the gains
Two settings decide everything: how much XP a message is worth, and how fast levels spread apart. The commonest mistake is making progression too fast — the first levels fall in one evening, and there is nothing left to reach for.
The other mistake is not capping: with no minimum delay between gains, the system rewards whoever sends twenty one-word messages, not whoever takes part.
- A delay between gains (one minute is a good starting point) kills one-word spam.
- Voice XP rewards presence in voice, which often matters more than text on a gaming server.
- Excluded channels: command, meme and welcome channels should not earn XP.
- Double-XP channels steer attention towards a channel you want to revive, for a limited time.
Reward roles
Granting a role at certain levels is what gives the rest its meaning. A few principles avoid disappointment.
- Space the tiers: five well-chosen roles beat twenty, which lose all signalling value.
- Decide whether the previous role is removed on promotion. Stacking roles makes the member list unreadable; replacing them keeps one visible role per person.
- Never attach a sensitive permission to a level role: the level measures activity, not trust. A patient account can reach it.
- Check the Kuratos role position: it must sit above every role it has to grant.
The leaderboard
A leaderboard is useful as long as it stays reachable. One dominated for two years by the same three people motivates nobody; one reset periodically, or also shown over a rolling window, keeps its interest.
Kuratos publishes the leaderboard both inside Discord and on a web page dedicated to your server, so you can share it outside Discord without a screenshot.
Key points
- A levelling system makes seniority visible; it does not create activity on its own.
- A minimum delay between gains stops spam paying better than participation.
- Five well-spaced reward roles beat twenty.
- No sensitive permission should depend on a level: levels measure activity, not trust.
Frequently asked questions
Why is a member not earning XP?
The channel is probably excluded, or the minimum delay between gains has not elapsed. Also check the member does not carry a role excluded from the system.
Can you earn XP in voice?
Yes, voice XP is part of the module. It matters on servers where most of the life happens in voice, where counting only text messages would produce a false leaderboard.
Is the leaderboard visible outside Discord?
Yes, every server gets a public leaderboard page on kuratos.net, which you can share without a screenshot.
Put this guide into practice
Kuratos sets up in minutes what this guide describes, and is configured from a web interface rather than through commands.
